Copious rains cripple life in North K'taka

Bangalore, Sep 18 (UNI) Five people, including a woman were killed and several others injured, in rain related incidents, even as copious rains affected the normal life in North Karnataka.

According to official sources here, a police constable R M Chawadi (35), a rescue team member, was washed away while crossing a Nala overflowing due to flash floods in Hadli village in Gadag district.

Kallappa Sangappa Megur (65) was also killed when his house collapsed in Antur Bentur village in Gadag.

A 45-year old woman was killed when her house gone way in Chammahalli Tanda in Davangere.

Two unidentified persons were killed in Huvinahadagali town when their houses collapsed due to heavy rains early today.

Nearly 1,000 sheep were washed away in Mudhol taluk of Bagalkot district.

Flash flood due to heavy rain inundated several villages and semi-urban areas in Koppal, Gadag, Haveri, Bellary, Davangere, Bagalkot and Raichur districts.

NH 63, connecting Hospet with Hubli, was cut off as three ft of water was flowing over Halageri bridge due to swollen Hirehalla stream in Koppal district. Hundreds of vehicles were stranded on either side of the Highway and officials were diverting the traffic.

This was second time North Karnataka was affected during this season. The people of the region had been badly affected due to floods last month in which more than 50 people had perished.
