Chennai, Sep 18 (UNI) In a bid to counter the 'Save Ram Sethu' campaign launched by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and other Hindu organisations, an all-party meeting has been convened here on September 24 to draw a strategy and prevail upon the Centre to implement the Sethusamudram Shipping Channel Project (SSCP).
Chief Minister and DMK President M Karunandhi agreed to convene the all-party meeting, after Communist Party of India (Marxist) leaders met him this evening and made a request to this effect.
In a statement here, CPI(M) State Secretary N Varadarajan, who met the Chief Minister, said after he stressed the need for an all-party meeting, Mr Karunanidhi fixed the date after consulting leaders of other allies.
Mr Varadarajan, who was accompanied by party's Central Committee member T K Rangarajan and State Executive Committee member K Balakrishnan, told the Chief Minister that the SSCP, which would be instrumental in the State's industrial development, should be implemented without any further delay.
He suggested that the all-party meeting adopt a resolution, urging the Congress-led UPA Government at the Centre to take speedy steps to implement the project in the wake of the campaign launched by the ''communal forces''.
