Jaipur, Sep 17:CPI(M) Polit Bureau member and Rajya Sabha MP Brinda Karat today said the UPA Government's projection of the Indo-US nuclear deal as a panacea to the energy crisis was based on a false estimation.
Speaking at a seminar on the deal, organised to mark golden jubilee and platimum jubilee of Rajasthan College and the Rajasthan University respectively here, Ms Karat said the government had to spend about Rs two lakh crore to generate the projected 40,000 MW of power from the nuclear power reactors.
The Marxist leader said the removel of US restrictions under the agreement was mainly intended to benefit the nuclear reactor industry in the US.
''If the nuclear power was a solution to the energy crisis why the US has occupied Iraq... becuase it has an eye on that country's oil reserves,'' she said.
Stating that the Left parties will never be a party to the ouster of the UPA Government, Ms Karat said if the government cuts the branch on which it sits, then Left parties could not be balmed for its fall.
Ms Karat said that in the last three years of UPA rule the Left parties were able to bring to the fore the issues concerning people as against the politics of Mandir and Masjid, which dominated the national political scene for the last 15 years.
Speaking on the occasion, former diplomat Badra Kumar termed the deal a ''foolish decision'' on the part of the UPA Government.
''The real beneficiary would be the US corporates with America generating business worth 150 billion dollar by selling nuclear power plants to India without even transferring repcrocessing technology,'' he said.
Besides, the agreement is part of the strategic partnership and India has to follow a foreign policy in ''congruent'' with the US and would have a role of junior partner in its military policy in Asia, Mr Kumar added.
