Aligarh-Lucknow, Sep 17: Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has been closed for an indefinite period, following violence and arson after the murder of a student in the varsity precincts.

Talking to reporters in Lucknow this evening, special secretary (home) G K Tandon said Mohd Mazhar Naeem, pursuing BSc (Hons), was hacked by masked men late last night.

The student, hailing from Bagpat district, was rushed to hospital, but declared brought dead.

Enraged over the incident, students vandalised the offices of the Proctor and Vice-Chancellor and later resorted to arson.

Mr Tandon said the Special Task Force (STF) of police from Meerut had reached Aligarh to probe the case.

Meanwhile, police in strength had been deployed in the area to prevent fresh violence.

The situation, at present, was reportedly under control.
