Baripada, Sep 16 (UNI)Mayurbhanja Small Scale Industries Association (MDSSIA) today alleged that though Mayurbhanja district has high potential for producing high quality bullet proof steel that has a high demand in the national and international market no step has been been made to set up such industry in the district.
MDSSIA President Mohini Ranjan Hota said the district has rich deposits of Vanadium-bearing titaniferrous magnetic iron ore required for producing bullet proof steel but neither the state government nor the centrae had taken any step to exploit it.
Maharaja Late Pratap Chandra Bhanj Deo, the last king of the Bhanja dynasty who ruled the princely state from 1928-48, had launched a national vanadium Trust in mid forties and started the construction of a vanadium factory at Rairangpur to produce bullet proof steel but the dream project vanished into the oblivion with the end of royal rule.
After independence, the successive governments both at the Centre and in the state never bothered about its revival, he alleged He said the district has also rich deposits of iron ore, china clay, quartzite, soap stone, kyanite, fire clay, copper ore and asbestos and has high potential for setting up of pig iron plants and china clay washery plant.
But despite rich mineral deposits not a single mineral based industry worth the name has been set up in Mayurbhanja district during last six decades and the district continued to wallow in neglect.
Though recently the state government accorded Mayurbhanj the status of KBK in the Industrial Policy Resolution 2007 but unfortunately the operational guidelines for implementation of the IPR had not yet been announced, the association pointed out.
Association General Secretary Soumya Das said there was high potential for promotion and establishment of a network of footwear industries in the district and wanted to initiate suitable measures for setting up of these industries in the district.
