High Court CJ urges people to check foeticide

Panipat, Sep 16 (UNI) Referring to female foeticide as a blot on society, Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice Vijender Jain today exhorted the people to change their perceptions about the girl child in order to bridge the widening male-female ratio.

He was addressing a seminar on 'Decreasing female ratio in Haryana and legal Awareness' jointly organized by the National Women Commission, Haryana State Legal Services Authority, Panipat Nagrik Manch and Mata Sita Rani Seva Sansthan, Panipat here.

The CJ observed that in most of the cases, mothers are pressurised by the in-laws, including the husband to go in for an abortion and it was being carried out in connivance with the doctors. '' The law becomes helpless for want of evidence and witness'', he remarked.

He was of the viewpoint that this evil practice could be curbed through social awareness. He complimented the Haryana government for steps taken to check foeticide.

Justice Adrash Kumar Goyal who is also the chairman of Haryana State Legal Services Authority, said the society was becoming aware about the ill-effects of female foeticide and the central government had prepared an action programme to educate and motivate the people about this evil.

Justice Jasbir Singh and Additional Director General of police V N Rai also stressed the need for social awareness and to accord equal status to women in society.
