AP to procure milching cattle from Northern states

Hyderabad, Sep 16 (UNI) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy today said the government would purchase milching cows and buffaloes from Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan as part of the 'Pashukranthi' scheme, launched to distribute them to the poor families under self employment generation programme.

Reviewing the progress of the scheme with the officials here, Dr Reddy said the government had targetted the distribution of 1.32 lakh milching cattles to the poor and the women with the Self-Help Groups (SHGs) at a subsidised rate of 50 per cent during this year.

The government would procure more cattles if the demand increased, Dr Reddy said.

Stating that the scheme, launched recently in Anantapur and Vijayanagar was yielding good results with many poor families coming forward to establish small dairy farms, he said Rs 500 crore was allocated for the procurement of the cattle and to provide loans for fishing farms, an official release here said.
