Sri Lanka wins B'lore Challenge Cup

Bangalore, Sep 15 (UNI) Kurunegala RFC, Sri Lanka, lifted the Bangalore Challenge Cup defeating hosts Bangalore RFC by a slender margin of 13-12 in the historic Assetz e4e Madras Colombo Rugby Series played at the Sri Kanteerava Stadium here last night.

The visitors dominated the first half, scoring two tries and were at 10-0. Playing under flood lights, the Bangalore team fought back aggressively in the second half to increase their tally to 12 points, which was a result of two tries - one by Roshan and another by Fijian Roparte who also converted the try.

Heavy downpour did not deter the local crowd from supporting the home team, which came from behind to nearly beat Kurunegala.

Bangalore Captain Phil orchestrated the fight back, only to lose to the visitors by a point.

Wijewardene of Kurunegala RFC was presented the most valuable player of the match by Mr Mohan Krishna, President, South India Rugby Football Association (SIRFA).

The Winners trophy was presented to Kurunegala RFC by Mr Charu Sharma, President, Karnataka Rugby Football Union.
