Chennai, Sep 15: The controversy over carving out Salem railway division is far from over as the Opposition AIADMK today announced an agitation against the inclusion of Pollachi and Kinathukadavu in the Palakkad railway division.
AIADMK General Secretary J Jayalalithaa, in a statement here, said it was unfortunate and deserved to be condemned that the Railway Ministry had allowed inclusion of 58 km from Pollachi to Palakkad and 21 km from Pollachi to Kinathukadavu in the Palakkad railway division.
Demanding that these areas be included either with Madurai or Salem division, she said pressing the demand, the party's Coimbatore urban unit would stage a demonstration on September 18 in Pollachi.
Ms Jayalalithaa said the Railway Ministry, instead of conceding the demand of the people of Pollachi and Kinathukadavu, who had been fighting for broad gauge conversion for the past 12 years, had betrayed them by including these areas in the Palakkad division.
Pollachi, famous for coconut business, had earned a special place in the country's trade and including the area in the Palakkad division amounted to betraying the people. The ruling DMK and its MPs were party to the ''unjust'' decision, she alleged.
Now it was clear that the agitation launched by the DMK, under the leadership of Agriculture Minister Veerapandi S Arumugham, was only a drama enacted to hoodwink the public, she charged.
