Kendrapara, Sep 14: In the age of space walk and mobile talk, it may sound weird to most people but it is true. Villagers of Charigaon, a remote hinterland in Orissa with a population of 1000, had participated at a 'Yagnya' to propitiate God to protect them from frequent thefts and sobberies.
The villagers under the Kendrapara Police station resorted to this unusual preaching as the theft cases soared recently to which the police had no clue.
More than 40 cases of theft and robberies were reported in the village during the past three years. However, the local police so far has failed to arrest even a single person.
Finding no other alternative ''we prayed Almighty to protect us from the wrath of thieves,'' said a senior villager.
''Instances of organising 'yagna' to get rid from evils were aplenty but propitiating the god and seeking his/her protection from the thieves was something unheared so far,'' said a septuagenarian.
The 'yagna' was performed on Tuesday amdist reniditions of Sanskirt slokas by the priest. Later, a community feast was organised where over 1500 people took 'prasad.'
