Punjab to raise memorials for martyrs: Capt Kanwaljit

Jhoraran, Ludhiana Sept 14 (UNI) The SAD-BJP government would accord proper respect to the martyrs and raise suitable memorials in their native villages, Punjab Minister for Defense Services Capt Kanwaljit Singh said here today.

He was addressing a gathering at a ceremony to commemorate the death anniversary of Shaheed Hav. Isher Singh, a martyr of Saragarhi post, at village Jhorran.

Paying tributes to the Saragarhi martyrs on the occasion, the Capt said that only 22 brave soldiers had fought against 800-odd invaders and made the supreme sacrifice for the motherland.

The Minister said that the villages of the martyrs would be developed as modern villages, where all the basic amenities available in the cities would be provided.

The SAD-BJP government had decided to celebrate the days relating to the great martyrs by organising state-level functions and the Centenary Birth Anniversary of Shaheed Bhagat Singh was being celebrated at Amritsar on September 28 at national level, he said.

Capt Singh appealed to the people to participate in the birth centenary function being organised on September 27-28 and illuminate their houses on these nights like Diwali.

He assured that the memorial site of Havaldar Isher Singh would be properly developed by the government. He also assured that a dispensary would be opened in village and announced the construction of road from Gurdawara Sukh Sagar to Gurdawara Gur Sagar in the village.

Earlier, Capt Kanwaljit Singh and other dignitaries laid the wreaths before the statue of the martyr and armed contingent from 4 Sikh Regiment presented salute by reversing their arms.
