Murtidevi Award presented to Narayan Desai

Ahmedabad, Sep 14 (UNI) Veteran Gandhian and social worker Narayan Desai today received the 18th ''Murtidevi Award'' instituted by the Bharatiya Gyanpith at a function at Gujarat Vidyapeeth here.

The award was presented to Mr Desai at the hands of West Bengal Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi, grandson of Mahatma Gandhi.

''I dedicate this award to Mahatma Gandhi,'' said 84-year-old Mr Desai who is the son of Mahadev Desai, personal secretary to Mahatma Gandhi.

Mr Desai was selected for this award for his four-volume biography on Mahatma Gandhi in Gujarati ''Maru Jeevan Ej Mari Vani''. The award comprised a statuette of Goddess Saraswati, a citation, a memento and a purse of Rs one lakh. Mr Desai said he would use the award money for the devlopment of his institute named, Institute for Total Revolution in South Gujarat.
