Railways carry 308.88 MT of freight during April-August
New Delhi, Sep 13 (UNI) The Railways carried 308.88 million tonnes of revenue earning freight traffic during the first five months (April-August) of the current fiscal, reflecting an increase of 6.95 per cent during the corresponding period last year.
During April-August last year, the freight carried by the Railways was pegged 288.81 million tonnes, registering an increase of 20.07 MT.
During the month of August this year, it carried 61.83 million tonnes of freight. There was an increase of 6.49 MT over the freight traffic of 55.34 million tonnes actually carried by the Railways during the same period last year, reflecting an increase of 11.73 per cent.
During July, the freight traffic carried by the Railways was 61.80 million tonnes, showing an increase of 4.43 million tonnes over the freight traffic of 57.37 million tonnes during the same period last year.
The Railways earns 67 per cent of its revenues through freight but accounts for only 33 per cent of the entire freight business in the country.
