Chandigarh, Sep 13 (UNI) The Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) which manages the Bhakra dam and other hydro projects was awarded 8th Annual Greentech Environmental Excellence Gold Award 2007' in hydropower sector by the Greentech Foundation, New Delhi.
The BBMB was awarded the Gold Award for outstanding achievements in environment management at all its project stations during the year 2006-07.
This is the 5th Greentech Environmental Excellence Gold Award for BBMB by the Greentech Foundation since 2000-2001.
The award to BBMB was given for its enviornmental intiatives which include massive plantation programme undertaken by BBMB at all its project stations, under which more than 70,000 plants were planted during 2006-07.
The Community Development Programmes undertaken by BBMB for the welfare of the local people living around the villages of BBMB projects, for which the Board is spending more than Rs one crore every year.
The BBMB was also awarded the ISO:14001 certification from Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) during the year 2006-07.
Another important step taken by the Board was its bio- diesel initiative through Jatropha Plantation Project at Talwara in Punjab on 300 hectares of land.
Carbon Trading of about 94.44 MW of generation capacity addition under RM and U programme through CDM initiative was also undertaken by BBMB.
The Green-belt Development Programme undertaken by BBMB around Bhakra and Pong reservoirs and along BBMB canal network was another important intiative.
The BBMB has also won appreciation for the continual increase in migratory birds at the Ramsar Wetland of Pong Dam reservoir. More than 1,20,000 migratory birds of about 220 species visited Pong Reservoir (Maharana Pratap Sagar) during 2006-07.
