Chandigarh, Sep 12 (UNI) Volvo Car Corporation, the global automaker, today launched their two flagship models- Volvo S80 and Volvo XC90 -- a sedan and a Sports Utility Vehicle(SUV).

Volvo Car Overseas Corporation President Peter Cornellis told media persons here that Volvo Car India (VCI) would import the two cars as CBU's (completely built units) from its Sweden plant and sell them initially through three dealderships, one each in Mumbai, New Delhi and Chandigarh.

Mr Cornellis said though the company had no plans at present to manufacture the cars in India but it could explore the possibility if the demand volume increased, government simplified the procedures and cut down the heavy duty and taxes.

He said the company will expand its dealers network and add Hyderabad, Chennai, Banglore, Pune, Ahmedabad, Jaipur and Kolkata in its fold by 2008.

He said the S80 and the XC90 cars would be available with a 24 valve 3.2 litre and 32 valve 4.4 litre petrol engine and 2.5 litre diesel options, meeting all emission requirements and sharing the same power train and were priced between Rs 38-44 lakh and Rs 45-52 lakh respectively.

Mr Cornellis said, ''Volvo is currently present in 100 countries and we are now increasing our footprint in other markets. India seems to have immense potential for luxury cars in the Asia Pacific region and we are sure our brand, loaded with the best on-road safety and luxury features, will be well accepted by the Indian consumer''.

He said Volvo Car India had completed the homologation tests for its two cars and only the final certificates from Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) were awaited. All petrol and diesel versions of S80 and XC90 were with the ARAI in Pune for undertaking the homologation process since April 2007, he added.
