Shillong, Sep 12 (UNI) Meghalaya Police today arrested a social activist for staging an indefinite hunger strike against the state government in front of the Secretariat here.

East Khasi Hills District Deputy Commissioner B Dhar said Michael N Syiem was arrested for violating the Section 144 CrPC.

Syiem was on hunger strike to protest against the Congress-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance Government's failure to reimburse the expenditure incurred by the Forever Young's Sports Club (FYSC) in revamping a swimming pool.

The FYSC had claimed a compensation of Rs 1,03,50,000 from the state government for running the Crinoline Swimming Pool before it was taken over by the Sports and Youth Affairs Department, the activist said.

He said the swimming pool had been leased out to FYSC for ten years at Rs 75,000 per annum.

Despite the claim for compensation submitted to the Commissioner and Secretary of the Department on August 27 as per the latter's invitation, no communication on the matter had been received by the club, he alleged.
