Hyderabad, Sep 12 (UNI) Activists of the BJP and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) today staged rail and rasta roko in different parts of Andhra Pradesh, in protest against the demolition of the mythical Ramsethu as part of the Sethusamudram Shipping Canal Project (SSCP).
The commuters in the city had a difficult time reaching their destinations as the party activists, led by BJP State unit President Bandaru Dattatreya, detained the New Delhi-bound AP Express at the Secunderabad Railway Station for about an hour and staged rasta roko in eight places in the city.
They protested against the government's decision to go ahead with the SSCP, ''hurting'' the religious sentiments of Hindus.
As many as 200 activists were taken into custody and later released.
Reports of protest came from other parts of the state too. In Vijayawada, BJP and VHP activists disrupted traffic on the Chennai-Kolkata National Highway for more than 30 minutes and raised slogans against the UPA Government for turning a blind eye to the appeals of crores of Hindus to ensure declaration of Ramsethu as a World Heritage site.
Sixty activists were taken into custody and released later on personal surety.
In Visakhapatnam, 44 activisits of BJP and various Sangh Parivar organisations, led by BJP State Secretary B Ranga Mohan, were held for blocking vehicular traffic on the National Highway.
