Rally held to urge K'taka Govt to halt power plant
Mysore, Sep 12 (UNI) A massive rally was held here today to urge the Karnataka Government to drop the proposed Rs 5,500 crore thermal power plant at Chamalapura.
Prominent personalities, including Jnanpith awardee Dr U R Anantha Murthy, litterateur Devanur Mahadeva, former Deputy Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, former Union Minister V Sreenivasa Prasad, former Ministers H Viswanath and M Shivanna and Lankesh weekly editor Gowri Lankesh, activists of progressive organisations, theatre personalities, students and farmers from Mandya, Chamarajanagara and Mysore districts participated in the rally.
Eighteen school children, who watered the plants on the dais marking the beginning of the rally, chanted a slogan ''stop the proposed thermal power plant, save tomorrow for us''.
Speakers called upon the protestors not to give up their fight even if the Government succeeded in acquiring lands from farmers at a good price.
The rally passed a resolution, urging the Government to drop the project immediately and asked the farmers and citizens of Mysore to continue the agitation until they got justice.
