Lucknow, Sep 12 (UNI) Terming the sacking of 6,504 cops by the Uttar Pradesh government 'unconstitutional', the principal opposition Samajwadi Party (SP) today demanded a probe by a High Court judge.

''Chief Minister Mayawati is only working for the welfare of certain communities and her yesterday's decision of sacking 6,504 constables is unconstitutional,'' former state advocate general and SP Rajya Sabha MP Virendra Bhatia said while addressing newspersons here.

The probe committee report, on the basis of which the annulment of police recruitment followed, was prepared under the pressure of the CM, he alleged.

''The probe committee chief, ADG Shailjakant Mishra was IG, PAC, when these alleged anomalies took place in the PAC recruitments. Why did not he take action then,'' he asserted.

Assuring his support to the dismissed constables, Mr Bhatia said ''I will support those who will move the court against the government's move.'' Altogether, over 22,000 policemen were recruited during the previous Samajwadi Party regime between 2004 and 2006 and several irregularities were detected in the probe conducted by the present Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) government, after it came to power in May last.
