Rajkot, Sep 11 (UNI) In a bid to give a major boost to the Khadi and Village Industries, Chairperson of Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) Kumuben Joshi today said it had increased the wages of spinners and weavers by 25 per cent all over the country.

Talking to mediapersons here today after attending the 'Tridasabdi Mahotsav Samaroh' (30 years of existence of Khadi Gramodyog Sangh-Samanvaya, Rajkot), Ms Joshi said unless and until the future of rural artisans, weavers and spinners was secured, it would not be possible to bring about an upswing in the fortunes in the countryside.

The weavers and spinners would be insured and social security would be provided to them, she informed.

She said KVIC was planning to provide special incentives to the weavers and spinners on the basis of their work efficiency and to enhance the Khadi products.

She said the Commission also planned to set up a national technological institute at Nasik in Maharashtra, which will impart 16 courses at undergraduate level.

The KVIC is also planning to revive the sick units of Khadi Gramodyog by providing them financial aid. It had already identified such sick units and work was on to revive them, she said.

The KVIC chairperson said to catch up with the competition in an era of globalisation, fashion designers and industry leaders were roped in to redesign the khadiware to make it trendy, so that it would appeal to all, particularly the youths.

Ms Joshi stressed on the need to focus on quality, packaging and marketing of products.

Earlier, she inaugurated Pre-weaving unit-cum-design weaving Training Centre and an in-house Textile Laboratory at Samanvay here.
