Vijender, Jitender earn easy wins, through to QF in sr natl boxing

New Delhi, Aug 27 (UNI) Doha Asian Games bronze medallist Vijender of Railway Sports Promotion Board (RSPB) stormed into the quarter-final with an effortless victory in 75kg category on the third day of the 54th Senior Men National Boxing championship here today.

Vijender outscored Bengal's J Ramiah in a totally one-sided contest which was stopped by the referee when the Railwayman had taken a 22-2 lead in the third round.

Vijender did not allow his opponent open his account in the first two rounds which he led 8-0 and 16-0. The Bengal pugilist could only score in the third round but his opponent turned out to be too much of a match for him.

Vijender's fellow Railwayman amd Melbourne Commonwelath Games bronze winner Jitender Kumar also had a comfortable victory as he outscored Meghalaya's Mohan for an RSC verdict in the third round in a 51kg pre-quarterfinal contest.

Another top Railways pugilist Jai Bhagwan also earned an RSC outscored verdict in the third round when he had taken a 23-3 lead over Shahensha of Madhya Pradesh in 60kg.

For defending chamipions Services Sports Control Board (SSCB), Som Bahadur Pun (64kg) and AK Lakra (57kg) did not have to sweat to earn quater-final berths.

Pun outpunched Tej Bahadur of Meghalaya for an RSC verdict in the third round when he had taken a 22-2 lead while Lakra registered his victory in even shotrter time earning a knock out verdict in the first round over P Ranjith of Tamil Nadu.

Earlier in the day, world cadet champion Balbir Singh of RSPB continued his domination in the light-flyweight category with another easy win in the pre-quarterfinal bout.

Balbir's outscored Chandigarh's Paramjeet in a one-sided contest which was stopped by the referee, when the Railwayman had taken a 23-3 lead in the third round.

Balbir straigtaway landed a couple of left jabs on Paramjeet as soon as the bout began and was leading 12-1 at the end of first round.

The Railwayman went for the kill in the second round and went ahead 21-3 and then the refree stopped the contest just a couple of seconds after the start of the third round with the score reading 23-3 in Balbir's favour.

Asian Cadet champion Sanjay Kolte of Services Sports Promotion Board (SSPB) also won a low scoring light-flyweight bout over Dilip of Jharkhand 17-6.
