Farrukhabad, Aug 27 (UNI) Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Mulayam Singh Yadav today alleged the attempts of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati to impose Value Added Tax (VAT) in the state would adversely affect the traders and general public.

Addressing an election gathering here, where by-election for the assembly constituency was scheduled on August 31, Mr Yadav said '' the Mayawati government was aiming to impose VAT in the state, which would mar the traders and general public.'' ''Traders of the state are enraged over this issue and her government would come to an end, if the tax would be levied forcefully.'' The SP leader claimed, ''I denied to impose VAT in the state during my regime without the assent of traders.'' ''The state exchequer had an hefty amount of Rs 25 thousand crore soon after the Vidhan Sabha election, but the state is now under the debt burden of Rs 1.61 crore,'' Mr Yadav claimed.

''Ms Mayawati was demanding special package in the name of development from the centre, which my regime never asked for.'' Mr Yadav accused Ms Mayawati of being ''biased'' and working towards the welfare of certain class only.
