Punjab govt to celebrate Shaheed Bhagat Singh birth anniversary

Chandigarh, Aug 27 (UNI) The Punjab Government would celebrate the 150th birth centenary of Shaheed Bhagat Singh at Amritsar on September 28 on a grand scale to spread the message of his martyrdom.

On that day, Shaheed Rajguru and Shaheed Sukhdev, associates of Shaheed Bhagat Singh would also be remembered.

This was disclosed by Chief Secretary Singh while presiding over a high level meeting to review the arrangements for the celebrations here today.

The Chief Secretary said that the present generation needed to be educated about the supreme sacrifices made by Shaheed Bhagat, Shaheed Rajguru and Shaheed Sukhdev at the prime of their youth. "We must launch a sustained campaign to educate the present generation regarding our hard earned freedom", he said at the meeting.

He emphasised to promote the idea of national integration amongst the youth in particular and masses in general through lectures, discussions and cultural activities all over the state.

A professional event management company would be appointed to manage the functions at Amritsar. A special exhibition on the freedom fighters would be displayed in the art gallery at Amritsar.

The Deputy Commissioners of the state had been directed to organise various functions related to the struggle for freedom as a part of the celebrations of the birth centenary in their respective districts. The deputy commissioner of Amritsar had been asked to ensure proper cleanliness of the city before and during the celebrations.

The Chief Secretary has especially asked the department of Finance to release adequate funds for the event.
