Labourer beaten to death by policemen, inquiry ordered

Hardwar, Aug 27 (UNI) The district magistrate today ordered a judicial inquiry into the shocking incident in which a person was allegedly beaten to death by policemen in Rahmatpur village yesterday.

The police team, led by Mr Shanti Kumar sub-inspector of Manglaur police station in the district, raided the village under Roorkee police kotwali, to nab a suspect accused in a kidnapping case.

Sources claimed that without properly identifying the house of the suspect the police party alleged as started beating up villagers indiscriminately. They did not even inform Roorkee police before raiding the village, they added.

The police personnel tied up a mason, Noor Hasan, to a pole and allegedly thrashed him till he died, eyewitness said. Many villagers also sustained injuries in the police action.

The SSP, V.Murgeshan said on the complaint of the son of the deceased, Israr, a case under section 302 of IPC had been registered in Roorkee police kotwali against all the members of the police team, including the sub-inspector and, two police constables.

All the five accused have been suspended. The police, however, is yet to arrest any of the accused.
