ICL not trying to hijack cricket admn from BCCI: Kapil

By Staff

Chennai, Aug 26 (UNI) Former Indian captain Kapil Dev, who is at the centre of controversy as the Executive Chairman of Essel Group's Indian Cricket League (ICL), today said the ICL was not trying to hijack cricket administration from the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) and becoming the governing body of the sport.

Participating in a programme 'Cricket Controversies', on NDTV, Kapil who holds the credit of having earned the only World Cup victory for the country lashed out at the functioning and the attitude of the board towards former players who had served the country.

Kapil said it was BCCI's attitude towards the ICL, which only aims at producing more talent for Indian cricket, was pushing it to the idea of becoming another governing body of the game. Kapil alleged that BCCI had no time for the players interests and ensured their welfare.

The former cricketing greats had given everything for the country but they got nothing from the board. ''The BCCI should stop behaving like a cop and talk to the players,'' he said.

Kapil also charged that BCCI though pointed itself as a democratic body in reality it was behaving like a 'dictator'.

BCCI had no time for former cricketers and the richest cricket body in the world was only leaving its cricketers the poorest in the world, he alleged.

Kapil said he would make sure that if the ICL makes money it would go back to the game.

Kapil also said it was the BCCI which was pushing ICL to pick another Indian team. He also denied that ICL was poaching players.

''On the other hand we want even players like Sachin, Sourav and Dravid to take part in the league wherever possible for them to do so,'' he said.

Every cricketer should be allowed to make his life better for himself, Kapil said.

He laso charged that the media was trying to portray his role in the ICL as a ''battle between him and former captain Sunil Gavaskar''.

Kapil said he had been receiving many fax messages from players expressing their willingness to join ICL.
