Events of national importance to be popularised at state level

New Delhi, July 27 (UNI) To achieve popular participation, Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh today asked states to organise commemorative events of national importance at the local and regional levels.

Mr singh said the Central Government has identified a number of such programmes which will be taken up soon.

He was addressing a meeting of the Chief Ministers and their representatives here for commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the first War of Independence, 1857, the 60th anniversary of Indian independence and other related events.

To achieve popular participation in commemoration programmes, it is important that a series of such events are organise at the local and regional levels by the States, Mr Singh said.

The Minister informed that the National Implementation Committee received some projects for financial assistance from the States and felt that many of these could certainly be taken up by the States themselves.

Tourism and Culture Minister Ambika Soni in her welcome address briefed the meeting about the various functions to be organised on different occasions. She said the Chief Ministers' meeting was convened so that important roles for states in taking out the message of freedom struggle to people can be underlined.

Home Minister Shivraj V Patil said, with the participation of all states, the celebrations would be more meaningful and useful.

The meeting discussed among other things the constitution of state level committees for chalking out commemorative programmes. The Chairman, National Implementation Committee, urged the States to constitute such committees at the earliest where no committee has been formed so far.

State governments could incorporate their programmes with special focus on events which happened in their respective states, Mr Singh said.
