Chandigarh, June 7 (UNI) Punjab Advocate General H S Mattewal today unveiled a eight-point strategy to tackle the chronic problem of increasing pendency of government cases in courts.

Addressing the Financial Commissioners and Administrative Secretaries here today, Mr Mattewal said each department should focus on timely submission of written statements.

He also stressed upon handling the cases at administrative level rather than to push each case to the High Court. A Quick response to queries of the AG office would be appreciated, he told the bureaucrats.

He pointed out that ensuring all legal formalities at the time of filing of writs would help pursus the cases in a proper manner.

He said it was the duty of each department to issue letters within one week of summoning and ensure proper inter- departmental coordination, especially in the cases of public interest litigation.

Mr Mattewal also emphasised on the proper briefing of law officers on each case.

It is for the first time that an Advocate General of Punjab has addressed a meeting of Administrative Secretaries to solve the problem of pendency of government cases.

In a similar meeting of senior police officers of the state, including district police chiefs last month, Mr Mattewal had taken a serious view of Investigating Officers (IOs) failing to dispose off in time before the courts.
