Hyderabad, May 22 (UNI) Andhra Pradesh Minister for Energy, Coal and Minority Welfare Mohd Ali Shabbir today said security at the Mecca Masjid would be further strengthened.

The Minister called for a review meeting of the clerics and officers of the Archaeology and Wakf departments and discussed ways to strengthen the security at the Mecca Masjid, where a bomb blast left 14 dead and more than 50 injured on May 18.

The Minister directed the officials to erect a fresh 'chabutra' (platform) in place of the one destroyed in the blast.

Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said issues like training of volunteers, increasing the height of the compound wall of the Masjid and setting up of metal detectors at the entrances would be decided after discussing with clerics and police officials.

The Minister told mediapersons that he had directed the officials to give a report on the working of the staff and the requirements of the Masjid. The government had decided to sanction Rs 30 lakh for provision of drinking water and construction of a sump, he added.

Archaeology department Director Kedareswar said his department had submitted a proposal to revive the Charminar and Mecca Masjid at a cost of Rs one crore to the Centre, and appealed to the Minister to expedite the sanction.
