Kohima, May 22 (UNI) With a view to enhance growth of Naga chilli, popularly known as 'Raja Mircha', the Nagaland Horticulture Department (NHD) had organised training programmes in three identified Naga Chilli-growing districts.

Official sources said here today that the NHD identified Kohima, Peren and Mon districts as Naga Chilli-growing districts and imparted technical training in nursery raising, cultivation, management of fields, use of bio-agents and post-harvest handling to the farmers.

Besides, training on selection of good quality seeds from healthy mother plants of second bearing was imparted.

The NHD urged the farmers to commercialise cultivation and give up traditional methods and become progressive farmers.

It entered into a partnership with the ITC, Guntur, Andhra Pradesh for post-harvest handling of the produce by transferring technology for quality drying using Solar energy system and procuring poly-house driers through the ITC, official sources informed.

For obtaining protection of property rights of the farmers, the NHD prepared the geographical indication and GSI Mapping of the identified Naga Chilli-growing areas.

The model project for Naga Chilli cultivation of five hectares was being set up in Kohima, Peren and Mon districts, which would be equipped with all the infrastructure and technical guidance and directly supervised by the NHD.

If successful and viable, the technologies would be transferred to the farmers, so that commercial cultivation could take off in full swing, sources added.
