IT collection in NE up by 2.8 per cent

Guwahati, May 22 (UNI) Income Tax (IT) collection in the North East has gone up by 2.8 per cent last financial year.

Addressing newspersons here today, Chief Commissioner of IT (Guwahati and Shillong Region), R Bhardwaj said the quantum of Income tax paid in the NE in the 2006-07 fiscal was Rs 1,758 crore.

The total number of assesses in the region this year were 5,29,689.

Mr Bhardwaj informed that under Section 133 (A) of the IT Act, 97 cases of tax evation, valuing upto Rs 3.82 crore, were detected in a general survey.

Under the 'specified survey' based on 'tax deduction by source', 381 defaulter, amounting to Rs 32 crore, were identified.

Oil India Limited leads the list of top tax payers in the region, followed by BRPL, NEEPCO, Asom Gas Company and Asom Petroleum Company.
