Guwahati, May 22 (UNI) Asom has urged the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to make all efforts to secure the release of the Indian engineers abducted in Nigeria.

Asom Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi called up the MEA yesterday and urged the officials to make efforts to secure the release of the abducted engineers, one of whom hails from the state.

He also called up the relatives of Debasish Kakoty at Sivsagar in Asom and assured them of all help from the Asom government in securing his release.

Lata Kakoty, the wife of the abducted 32-year-old fire engineer Debashish Kakoty, told the media from Port Harcourt in Nigeria that her husband's employer, Oil Exploration Company Indorama, had been contacted by the abductors who said the men were safe.

"Officials of the company spoke to my husband a few hours ago and they told me both men are safe and are likely to be released soon, may be today," Lata said.

Indorama's officials did not give her details about the abductors or revealed whether any ransom was being paid for the release of the men, she said.

Mr Kakoty, who hails from Sivasagar town in Asom, and Sunil Dave of Maharashtra were abducted from their residential quarters in Port Harcourt on Saturday morning. Lata said Kakoty was dragged out of bed by the abductors.

In Sivasagar, Kakoty's mother Kumkum said she was praying for the safe return of her son, whom she described as a mild natured person who had excelled in debating and quizzing. ''I last spoke to him on Friday when he was about to leave for office. He had then told me he was getting late for office and would call me on Sunday,'' she said, breaking down.
