Vice Admiral Byce inaugurates murals of maritime past

Mumbai, May 11 (UNI) Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief Western Naval Command Vice Admiral, S S Byce inaugurated the murals of maritime history on the Dockyard wall near Lion Gate.

The proposal to undertake the painting work was proposed by a noted artist Brinda Miller and taken up under the Jindal South West Foundation (JSW) by Sangeeta Jindal. The painting project was completed at a cost of Rs 10 lakh and used a coat of UV paint to protect it from the damaging effects of sunlight.

The paintings depict the Maritime history of India, the ports and coastal forts of Surat, Bengal and Bombay in murals that have been inspired by ancient engravings and etchings, along with the Dutch, Portuguese and British influences.

Vice Admiral Byce inaugurating the murals yesterday said these were part of the Navy's efforts to create awareness among people, about the force's role in protecting the country's maritime assets and in assisting in its economic growth.

The Navy has always been on the forefront in restoration and preservation of heritage structures, he added.
