Haryana to remember 1857 heroes

Chandigarh, May 11 (UNI) A special function to commemorate the supreme sacrifices made by the freedom fighters and patriots of Haryana during the First War of Independence of 1857 will be organised at Narnaul tomorrow .

Chief Parliamentary Secretary Dharambir Singh said Narnaul and Rewari were popularly known as the land of warriors and freedom fighters.

He said a War Museum would be set up at Rewari at a cost of Rs 20 lakh in memory of the brave soldiers.

He said Haryana played an important role in the first freedom struggle. The Indian soldiers and their brave heroes like Rao Tula Ram and Nawab of Jhajjar fought bravely against injustice and tyranny of the Britishers in the battlefield of Nasibpur village near Narnaul during the 1857 War.

Programmes would be organised throughout the state to apprise the youth about the sacrifices and contribution made by the great freedom fighters and martyrs of the state for the freedom of the country.

The Haryana government, he said, has decided to spend an amount of about Rs ten crore on celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the First War of India's Independence in a befitting manner throughout the state.
