TN govt to bear Loganathan's family visit to US

Chennai, Apr 18: Expressing anguish over the death of professor G&13;V Loganathan in the Virginia tech massarce on Monday, the Tamil Nadu&13;Government today announced in the Assembly that it would bear the&13;entire expenditure of his family members' visit to the United States to&13;attend his funeral.

Replying to a special call attention motion moved by the AIADMK,&13;Congress, PMK and the Left Parties, Electricity Minister Arcot N&13;Veerasamy said though Prof Loganathan hailed from a modest family at&13;Karattadipalayam near Gobichattipalayam in Erode district, he had&13;excelled in education and obtained a Doctorate degree.

He said nine members of Loganathan's family, including his parents&13;and three brothers, approached the Government seeking help to visit the&13;US to attend his funeral.

Chief Minister M Karunanidhi had deputed a special officer to help&13;them get passports and visas immediately, he said and added the Chief&13;Minister's Secretariat had also approached the US Consulate here to&13;issue emergency visas to them.

The US Consulate had assured the Government that visas would be&13;issued immediately once the family members received their passports, he&13;added.

Mr Veerasamy said the Government would also take flight tickets&13;for all nine family members and bear the entire travel expenditure.

Earlier, AIADMK whip K A Sengottaiyan, Mr C Gnanasekaran&13;(Congress), Mr Ramakrishnan (MDMK), Mr V Sivapunniyam (CPI), Mr&13;Velmurugan (PMK), Mr C Govindasamy (CPI-M) and Selvam (DPI) condoled&13;the death of prof Loganathan and urged the Tamil Nadu Government to&13;extend all possible help to the bereaved family to attend his funeral&13;in the US.

Mr Gnanasekaran urged the Government to unveil a portrait of Mr&13;Loganathan at Modakurichi Government High School, his alma mater, as a&13;mark of respect to him.
