Squalls hit city twice

Chandigarh, Apr 18 (UNI) Squalls lashed Chandigarh and its adjoining areas in Punjab and Haryana twice last night, while several areas in the region experienced rain dipping the temperatures.

The maximum temperature fell by three degrees to five degrees below normal following the rain caused by western disturbance over Jammu and Kashmir and its neighbourhood.

The squalls with 70 km and 83 km per hour speed rattled window panes, blew off hoardings and broke tree branches. The city recorded 6.0 mm rain, plumetting the maximum temperature to 30.8 degrees Celsius, four degrees below normal.

According to the Weather Office here, upper air cyclonic circulation lay over Punjab and adjoining Haryana and northern Rajasthan and extends upto 3.1 km above sea level.

The mercury, which showed rising trend recently, declined by five degrees below normal at Ludhiana, four degrees at Ambala, three degrees each at Amritsar and Patiala and two degrees at Karnal.

Amritsar with 36.8 degrees Celsius, three degrees below normal, was the hottest place in Punjab. The town measured 0.3 mm rain.

However, Ludhiana, where the temperature dipped to 30.6 degrees Celsius, was the wettest place in the state, recording 25.6 mm rainfall. Patiala recorded the maximum temprature at 32.6 degrees and 4.8 mm rain.

In Haryana, the temperature dropped by four degrees below normal at Ambala, registering 32.0 degrees. The town reported 10.3 mm rain.

The temperature also stayed low in Himachal Pradesh with several areas, including Bhuntar, Sundernagar, Pandoh, Rampur, Suni, Sujanpur Tira and Naudan, experiencing rainfall. Certain areas were lashed by windstorm and hail. The mercury settled at 22.1 degrees, two degrees above normal at Shimla.

The Met office has predicted light to moderate rain or thundershowers at many places in Himachal Pradesh and duststorm or thunderstorm with light to moderate rain at few places in Haryana and Punjab during the next 24 hours. Hailstorm or thundersquall with windspeed exceeding 45 km per hour is likely to hit the region during the period.
