Byndoor, Karnataka, Apr 18 (UNI) Union Labour Minister Oscar Fernandes today stressed that construction of more vented dams has become essential, particularly in the coastal districts to recharge the depleting groundwater level.

Inaugurating the Rs 9.35 crore salt water check dam across Chakra river at Katte Belthur, near here, he said the Union Government would help such vented dam projects through the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS).

Referring to 'Paschima Vahini' project of linking West flowing rivers of the undivided Dakshina Kannada district, the Minister said it was a novel project which should be taken up to ease both the irrigation and drinking water problems and prevent draining of river water into the sea. If the State Government took up this project, the Centre would provide help through NREGS, he added.

Karnataka Medical Education and Udupi district incharge Minister Dr V S Acharya, who was present, said that ''if the Paschima Vahini project is implemented, we can save four tmc of water which is now being wasted. If this draining of water into the sea is prevented, it can be best utilised for irrigation and drinking purpose, besides promoting tourism activities in the district.

Senior BJP leader and State Finance Commission Chairman A G Kodgi inaugurated the Rs 6.75 crore salt water vented dam across Souparnika river near Kollur in the district.
