New Delhi, Apr 18 (UNI) In an apparent case of human trafficking, a BJP member of Parliament from Gujarat was arrested along with a woman and a 16-year-old boy at the Indira Gandhi International Airport here this morning, while on way to Toronto in Canada.
Babu Bhai Khima Bhai Katara (46), Lok Sabha MP from Dohad (reserved constituency) in Gujarat, was detained by the immigration officials along with Paramjit Kaur (38) and her son Amarjit, while he was about to board a flight to Toronto this morning, according to a senior airport official.
''He was detained after it was found that the woman accompanying the MP was using the passport of Babu Bhai Katara's wife Sharada Ben and the boy had the passport of his son Rajesh.'' A senior police official, looking after airport security said Katara, along with the other two, was to take Air India Flight 187 at about 0730 hrs when he was detained and questioned before being handed over to the Delhi Police at about 1530 hrs.
''They have been charged for forgery, impersonation and cheating under Sections 419, 420, 468, 471 and 120 (B) and a case registered at the IGI Airport police station.'' During interrogation, the lady who hailed from Kapurthala in Punjab said she had paid Rs 30 lakh to Katara for making her reach Canada. Purportedly, it seems to be a case of human trafficking and investigations are on, he added.
''The deal was reportedly stuck by his secretary Rajendra.'' Meanwhile, after the issue raised a storm due to the involvement of an MP, the case was later in the day handed to the Crime Branch of the Delhi Police for detailed investigation.
A person involved in human trafficking was liable to a maximum of ten years of imprisonment.
