'SC staying OBC reservation, a slap on UPA's face'
New
Delhi,
Mar
29:
The
BJP
today
welcomed
the
Supreme
Court's
decision
to
stay
27.5
per
cent
reservation
for
OBCs
in
Centrally
run
educational
institutions
and
said
it
was
a
slap
on
the
face
of
the
UPA
government
which
failed
to
place
the
case
in
the
right
perspective.
''The
court
order
shows
that
the
UPA
government
was
more
interested
in
reaping
political
benefits
than
providing
social
justice
by
such
half
hearted
efforts.
BJP
firmly
supports
50
per
cent
reservation
for
the
SCs,
STs
and
OBCs
on
the
basis
of
social
backwardness
and
reservation
for
the
economically
backward
sections
of
people
from
castes
and
communities
not
covered
under
reservation,''
BJP
Spokesman
Prakash
Javadekar
said.
''Unless
the
government
took
a
comprehensive
view,
it
could
neither
succeed
in
keeping
all
sections
happy
nor
keep
the
courts
happy,''
he
added.
The
SC
Bench
comprising
Justices
Arijit
Pasayat
and
Lokeshwar
Singh
Panta
stayed,
till
further
orders,
the
operation
of
government
notification
issued
in
January
this
year
providing
for
27.5
per
cent
reservation
for
OBCs
in
the
Centrally
run
educational
institutions
as
IITs,
IIMs
and
Post
Graduate
medical
science
courses
on
the
ground
that
the
government
had
failed
to
provide
any
authentic
and
reliable
data
to
justify
its
reservation
policy.
The
next
hearing
has
been
fixed
in
the
third
week
of
August.
