New Delhi, Mar 29: The BJP today welcomed the Supreme Court's&13;decision to stay 27.5 per cent reservation for OBCs in Centrally run&13;educational institutions and said it was a slap on the face of the UPA&13;government which failed to place the case in the right perspective.
''The court order shows that the UPA government was more&13;interested in reaping political benefits than providing social justice&13;by such half hearted efforts. BJP firmly supports 50 per cent&13;reservation for the SCs, STs and OBCs on the basis of social&13;backwardness and reservation for the economically backward sections of&13;people from castes and communities not covered under reservation,'' BJP&13;Spokesman Prakash Javadekar said. ''Unless the government took a&13;comprehensive view, it could neither succeed in keeping all sections&13;happy nor keep the courts happy,'' he added.
The SC Bench comprising Justices Arijit Pasayat and Lokeshwar&13;Singh Panta stayed, till further orders, the operation of government&13;notification issued in January this year providing for 27.5 per cent&13;reservation for OBCs in the Centrally run educational institutions as&13;IITs, IIMs and Post Graduate medical science courses on the ground that&13;the government had failed to provide any authentic and reliable data to&13;justify its reservation policy.
&13; The next hearing has been fixed in the third week of August.
