Shiv Sena woman is Thane Mayor

Thane, Mar 10 (UNI) Ms Smita Indulkar of Shiv Sena today became the Mayor of Thane city in the elections held here.

At the election, where newly elected members of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) cast their votes by raising their hands, instead of a secret ballot, Ms Indulkar, who was elected from the Tembi Naka ward, received 64 votes, while her rival Aparna Salvi got 47 votes. Ms Indulkar defeated Salvi by mere 17 votes.

Ashok Bhoir (BJP) was elected Deputy Mayor of the civic body. He defeated his only rival Hareshwar Tandel by the same margin of 17 votes. While Bhoir was polled 64 votes, Tandel got only 47 votes.

In a 116-member house, five Samajwadi Party corporators, including four female corporators remained neutral and did not vote, despite the fact that they were present in the house.

The election proceeding was conducted by presiding Konkan Divisional Commissioner Ms Valsa Nair Singh. Thane Municipal Commissioner was also present.

Immediately after being elected as the Mayor, Shiv Sena district chief Eknath Shinde and Thane MP Prakash Paranjpe greeted her.

Before talking to mediapersons, Ms Indulkar paid floral tributes to late district chief of the Shiv Sena Anand Dighe whom she considers as an inspiration.

She told that he first priority would be to work for the welfare of women in the city.

Later 16 members, including Rajan Kini were nominated to the Standing Committee. Of these, nine are from the Sena and allied parties, six from NCP and Congress combine and one from the Samajwadi Party. The three Mahrashtra Navnirmal Sena (MNS) members elected to the house, voted for the NCP-Congress combine in the elections.
