Shillong, Jan 18 (UNI) Former Lok Sabha Speaker Purno A Sangma today said he will not accept a Ministerial berth in the Union government following his decision to join the state politics.

'' I have had the opportunity to serve the country in different capacities and now I have decided to serve the people of my own state, '' Mr Sangma told UNI here.

Mr Sangma said he took the decision to return to the Meghalaya politics considering lack of leadership in the state.

His statement assumed significance in the wake of the Congress turmoil over the ''leadership issue'' in the state.

'' I am returning as coach and no more as a player, '' Mr Sangma said adding his return was not only to stake claim of Chief Ministership, but also to train upcoming Legislators in the state.

'' I have trained MPs in Japan, Afghanistan and Nepal and I felt that I should also impart my knowledge to our very own leaders irrespective of caste and creed, ' Mr Sangma pointed out.

The former Lok Sabha Speaker served as Meghalaya Chief Minister from 1988 to 1990 before turning to national politics in 1991. He was elected as Lok Sabha member from Tura Parliamentary constituency since 1977 till date.

He was the first tribal political leader to be elevated to the Cabinet rank.
