Protest against Saddam hanging during Id prayers

Bhopal, Jan 1: Id-ul-Zuha celebrations across Madhya Pradesh today were marred by protest against the hanging of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussain by wearing black arm bands by the faithfuls.

The Id prayers passed off peacefully, official sources here said.

At Badwani town in western Madhya Pradesh, Sunni Muslims displayed black arm bands during Id prayers at the Jama Masjid and three other mosques.

Sunni Samaj district chief Dr Abdul Rashid Patel said after the Id prayers, tributes were also paid to Saddam Hussain by rendering quotes from the Quran.

At Sendhwa town in Badwani district, few hundred Sunnis held a meeting and condemned hanging of the former Iraqi President.

Reports received here from Gwalior and Jabalpur said the Muslims by wearing black arm bands protested the hanging.

Earlier, effigies of US President George Bush were burnt at different places in the state immediately after Saddam was hanged to death on Saturday.

Madhya Pradesh Governor Balram Jakhar and Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan have greeted the Muslims on the occasion of Id-ul-Zuha and wished them happiness and prosperity.
