Bains and Gill hog limelight on day one

Chandigarh, Jan 1 (UNI) Qualifier Deepinder Singh Bains and wild card Mandeep Singh Gill, stole the show in the boys singles first-round matches as they ousted foreign players after tough contests on the opening day of the Sunny Enclave ITF Junior World Ranking (Group 3) Tournament at the CLTA Stadium here today.

Mandeep Gill was engaged in a marathon over three-hour contest against Rishi Rajpal of Canada at the courts number 3. The first two sets were most hotly contested affairs. The Canadian player won the first set in tie-breaker 7-6 (4). A never-say-die Mandeep fought a gallant battle to win the second set at 7-5. This infused more life in Mandeep's game as he raced to 6-0 triumph in the decider.

After surrendering the first set 3-6, Deepinder Bains was back into the game with an allan against Vladmir Lyashchenko (Russia). He won the next two sets with an identical score of 6-2.

The third foreigner to be on the court today was qualifier Jae-Beom Kim of Korea who displayed his class as he ousted Navaneetha Kannan Baska in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.

Polina Dzyuba of Russia snuffed out the challenge of Deepna Vazirani of India in straight sets 6-1, 7-6 (1) in the girls singles match. After splitting the first two games, the Russian player won five games in a row to win the first set. The Russian player was down 2-5 before she staged a grand rally to level the score at five-all and then six-all. In the tie-breaker, Polina raced to 6-0 lead before Deepna could open his account.

In all, Chandigarh first-round encounter, Ekettesh Chahal and Harnoor Kaur Mann, both wild cards, fought for every point before the former just managed to win in three well-contested sets 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Haruka Naito of Japan advanced to the second round with an easy 6-2, 6-0 verdict against Namrata Singh of India. Russian Regina Shtyagina (Russia) defeated Jilke Nelord (India) 6-1, 7-6 (5) in another first-round encounter.

Earlier, former Punjab Director General of Police Sarabjit Singh inaugurated the tournament, co-sponsored by Drish Shoes.
