PSB beats SAI

Jalandhar, Nov 11 (UNI) The Punjab and Sindh Bank (PSB) defeated promising Sports Authority of India (SAI) by 3-1 in the 23rd Indian Oil Surjit Hockey Tournament here today while Police beat Air India Mumbai by 4-1.

In Women's section, Central Railway, Northen Railway, Pepsu XI and Chandigarh XI have made their way into the semi-finals. While Central Railway, Mumbai beat the Railway Coach Factory (RCF) Kapurthala by 3-1, Northern Railway shared points with Western Railway (1-1) in their last respective league matches played at the Burlton Park Surjit Hockey Stadium.

The Men's section super league round match between the P&S Bank and the SAI team produced classic Indian hockey with both teams playing well. However, the experienced bankmen defended well to avert frequent assaults made by young energised SAI players and also clinched opportunities to score as and when the same came in their way.

The star studded bank team began an offensive note with a field move bringing them penalty corner in the 3rd minute itself. However, SAI goal keeper Amaanulla averted goal with good save. In the 19th minute Kulwinder Singh made an advancement and scored first goal for the bankmen.

This lead prevailed till dying moments and in the meantime both teams made a number of moves against each other but defenders gave no chance for a goal. In 63rd minute bankmen scored their second goal through penalty corner shot by Sharanjit Singh and 67 minute, the winning team made another move and this time too Kulwinder Singh broke into SAI defence to sound the board (3-0). A minute before the closure SAI retaliated with Captain Yudhvir Singh reducing the margin with a spectacular field goal (1-3).
