Champaner, Nov 11 (UNI) President A P J Abdul Kalam today dedicated Gujarat government's revolutionary 'Jyotigram Yojana' to the nation that supplies 24 hours continuous three phase quality power to all the 18,065 villages in the state.
Addressing a huge gathering at the Champaner-Pavagadh World Heritage Site to mark the occasion, Dr Kalam praised the Gujarat government and the employees of the state-owned Gujarat Urja Vikash Nigam Limited (GUVNL) for having commissioned the unique scheme in a record time.
With the successful implementation of the innovative scheme to provide power to each and every village, the President said there would be a marked improvement in the quality of life in rural Gujarat.
Dr Kalam said the scheme which was aimed at providing better employment opportunity, health, computer education and a boost to the agriculture and food processing industries in village, would help uplift the socio-economic condition of 30 million rural citizens living in 18000 villages in Gujarat. It would also help check migration of people from villages to the cities, he hoped.
Claiming that Gujarat was first in the country to provide 24 hours three-phase uninterrupted power supply to all its 18,065 villages, chief minister Narendra Modi said the state had spent Rs 1,500 crore in the unique project that was implemented in a record time of 30 months.
Referring to the benefit of the scheme, Mr Modi said it would not only double the income of the farmers but also have a multiplier effect on the rural economy and quality of life in Gujarat as a whole. It had already reduced migration of people from rural to urban areas, he said adding that his government was determined to implement the revolutionary scheme in each village even as the state still face a shortage of 2,000 MW of power.
Earlier, Dr Kalam along with Governor Naval Kishore Sharma, and Chief Minister Modi visited a model Jyotigram Yojana village adjacent to the meeting place where he was apprised about the functioning of the scheme.
