Chennai, Nov 11 (UNI) Fenil Shah of Gujarat became the new National Under-11 Chess Champion after he played out a draw in 53 moves with G V Sai Krishna of Andhra Pradesh in the eleventh and final round of the tournament at Sri Ramachandra Medical College here today.

It was a dramatic turn in the sense that the last year's World Under-10 Chess Champion Sahaj Grover of Delhi with 8.5 points failed to withstand the aggressive attack unleashed by his opponent Shiven Khosla of Maharashtra.

Subsequently, it became an ''open Sesame'' for Fenil Shah, Y V K Chakravarthy (AP) and Shiven Khosla (Mah) with nine points each tied for the first place, but the progressive tie-break score solved their ranking in that order.

For Fenil Shah this is his first national title but his recent profiles include British Champion twice (2003), Commonwealth (2004) and Asian Silver (2005) medalist.

He also came third in the under-seven (2002) and under-nine (2004) nationals.

Priyanka Kumari (nine) who had won the national title, with a round to spare yesterday, bungled today against P Michelle Catherina (8.5) of Tamil Nadu, with a threatening position on the king-side.

With this win, Catherina achieved the coveted second position, behind Priyanka.

J Vaishnavi also of Tamil Nadu scored 8.5 points and was placed in the tie-break.

J C D Prabhakar, Chairman of the Organising Committee and Mr A Loyola, Deputy General Manager of Chennai Petroleum Corporation gave away the prizes at the closing ceremony, in which D V Sundar, Secretary of All India Chess Federation presided.

Manuel Aaron, General Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Chess Association, welcomed the gathering while K Thirukkathy, Chief Arbiter proposed a vote of thanks.
