'Wearing or shedding burqa, a preserve of Muslim women'

Varanasi, Oct 29 (UNI) All India Democratic Women Association (AIDWA) president and CPI(M) leader Subhasini Ali today said that the issue of wearing or shedding burqa should be left to the Muslim women alone.

''Wearing or shedding the burqa should be left at the will of the Muslim women. The issue should neither be dictated by Shabana Azmi or Maulana,'' Ms Ali told newspersons before addressing the 'Maha Kisan' rally at Korauta Bazar here.

Recently, actor-turned-Rajya Sabha MP Shabana Azmi had stirred up a storm by alleging that as per the Quran, it was not binding upon Muslim women to be burqa clad.

''Be it me or anybody else, we are not competent enough to interpret the Quran and hence the question of wearing or shedding the burqa should be left to Muslim women only,'' Ms ali said.
