CM instructs officials to evacuate people

Hyderabad, Oct 29 (UNI) Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, who is on tour of Krishna District at Machilipatnam, instructed the Collectors and other officials to immediately evacuate people from the low lying areas in the Prakasam, East Godavari, Krishna, Guntur, Nellore, Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram districts in view of the heavy rains.

A release from Chief Minister's office asked the officials concerned to rush enough relief materials, particularly food to the affected areas. Already 10,000 people had been evacuated and nine relief camps had been opened in Prakasam district, the release added.

Relief activities had been taken up in the affected areas.

Medical camps were being organised in the affected areas, it added.

Meanwhile, as per the instructions from Chief Minister, the Minister for revenue and rehabilitation Dharmana Prasada Rao held an emergency meeting with Commissioner disaster management and reviewed the situation.

Depression had formed over South West Bay of Bengal and the system was moving northward along the coast. It was likely to continue to move in a northerly direction and cross Andhra Pradesh coast between Bapatla and Kakinada by tonight.

Under its influence wide-spread rainfall with heavy to very heavy falls at a few places was likely over North Tamil Nadu and Coastal Andhra Pradesh during the next 24 hours.

The sea would be rough and the fishermen in these areas were advised not to venture into the sea.

The state as a whole received rainfall of 13.3 mm yesterday.

Highest rainfall of 60.5 cm was received in Nellore, followed by Prakasam with 51 cm, East Godavari- 51 cm, Guntur- 21 cm, Srikakulam 18- cm, Krishna 18- cm, and Visakhapatnam 14- cm.
