Madikeri, July 15 (UNI) Search is still on for the third successive day today to trace the body of a 11-year-old boy who had met with a watery grave after he slipped and fell into the river from a dilapidated bridge at Mukkodlu village in this district of Karnataka.
Braving heavy down pour, villagers had gathered in large numbers to search the body of Hemanth who died on Thursday last.Holding the elected representatives and Taluk Panchayat officials for the death of the boy, the villagers said the mishap could have been averted if they had repaired the bridge.
Stating that this was a third such incident in the surrounding areas, they said several small bridges connecting adjoining villages in the district were in a bad state for the last several years and the authorities had not bothered to set them right despite the action plan giving the go ahead for it.
Yesterday, irated villagers blocked the vehicles of Zilla Panchayath Vice President Neelamma and Taluk Panchayat President Kishore Kumar and sought an explanation for not carrying out the repair works. They dispersed after the leaders assured them of immediate action.
It was difficult to trace the body as heavy rain was lashing the area for the last two days.
