AP Govt orders enquiry into lathicharge on students: Jana
Hyderabad, July 13 (UNI) Andhra Pradesh Home Minister K Jana Reddy today said the Government had taken serious note of yesterday's police lathicharge here against students, including girls, for protesting against the hike in the fee in engineering colleges.
Talking to newspersons here, he said he had already asked the top police officials to submit a report on the incident. Stating that the police should have shown greater restraint, the Home Minister said he would enquire into the reasons leading to the lathicharge.
Several civil rights organisations and opposition parties had protested against the lathi-charge in general and beating up and dragging of girl students by policemen.
Mr Reddy said he would take necessary action on the policemen concerned after receiving the full report.
Ms Nannapaneni Rajakumari, President of the Women's-wing of the opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) also condemned the beating up and dragging of girl students by policemen and demanded action on those responsible for the heinous crime.
Ms Rajakumari alleged that the police were taking law into their own hands and had no decency to call women constables when there were many girls among the protesters.
