New Delhi, May 16 (UNI) Mutahida Majlis Amal's General Secretary Maulana Fazalur Rehman today said India could play an important role in ending violence in the volatile Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), abutting Afghanistan, of his country.
''India can do its bit in improving security situation in Wazirstan, which has witnessed unprecedented violence in recent months,'' the visiting cleric told mediapersons here.
''Shararat ko khattam karney main aur halaat behtar bananey main Hindustan ek eham role ada kar sakta hai (India can play a leading role in ending the mischif and improving the situation),'' he added.
Maulana Fazalur Rehman, who is accompanied by Senator Khalid Somroo, Maulana Mirauddin and Maulana Abdul Malik, acknowledged that India's influence in Afghanistan has increased in the recent years. Noting that that it was essential for Pakistan to have peace on its western and eastern border, he said this was needed for a peaceful and stable South Asia.
The Maulana, who will meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Leader of the Opposition L K Advani, said the priorities of the UPA government on Indo-Pakistan relations were not the same as that of the Vajpayee government. However, he said the basic focus should be to give required push to the bilateral peace process.
He said that Dr Singh should definitely visit Pakistan and he would be accorded a grand reception there.
